The Punt

At the bottom of a wine bottle there is most likely an indentation in a cone shaped.  This dent or feature brings up two frequently asked questions:  What is it called and what is the purpose of it?

There are two commonly known names.  Most people in the bottle making trade refer to it as a “kick up”.  More commonly called “punt” amongst wine drinkers and connoisseurs.

What purpose does the punt serve?  Punts have been in bottles form the earliest days of bottle making and no one really knows exactly what the purpose is.  There are a few different ideas out there and all of them make sense.

One speculation is that having a punt at the bottom of a bottle makes it more stable when compared to a flat bottomed or a punt less bottle.  It is also suggested that the punt makes the bottle stronger to withstand the high pressure of champagne.

Some people say the larger the punt the better the wine.  Other people think the punt is there to make it look like you're getting more than you actually are.

There are many other theories for the reason of the punt.  We do know that in today’s world there is no real need for the punt, but it just wouldn’t be the same without it.
